Abdulsalam’s life has always been connected to the land. As a child, he helped his father care for livestock, learning the patience and dedication farming requires. Now in his 50s, he manages the 4.5-hectare farm he inherited, raising 30 sheep and goats. His work supports his wife and six children. More than just a livelihood, the farm represents a family tradition, one that his son hopes to carry forward alongside his dream of becoming a pilot.
Despite persistent challenges, Abdulsalam finds strength in his work. He emphasizes the importance of patience and perseverance, qualities that livestock farming has taught him over the years. “Raising animals is more than a job; it teaches discipline and responsibility” he explains. His children are already learning these lessons as they help care for the sheep and goats, reinforcing their connection to nature and the family’s heritage. The rhythm of farm life, from feeding livestock to managing their well-being, instills values of resilience and commitment in the next generation.
Abdulsalam recalls his childhood moments of watching his father trim palm trees, but today, his own children are more engaged in animal care—playing with the goats and assisting with feeding.
This shift underscores the evolving focus of his farm, where livestock plays an even greater role in sustaining the family. However, the rising costs of animal fodder and other essential supplies pose significant challenges.
The support he received within the framework of the Baladiyati programme—particularly in the form of animal fodder—has been instrumental in maintaining his livestock and securing his family’s livelihood. “Without this assistance, it would have been extremely difficult to keep the animals healthy and productive” he says. Access to adequate fodder has not only eased financial strain but has also ensured that his livestock remains strong and continues to provide for his family.
Abdulsalam is among the 4,236 farmers and breeders who have benefited from the extension services provided by CIHEAM Bari, under the framework of the AICS component of Baladiyati. His story highlights the critical need for tailored support for livestock farmers. With the right resources and community support, resilient farmers like him can continue to safeguard livelihoods for generations to come.
